After gaining attention in the early 80's for his performances using heavy machinery, he formed the Boredoms in 1986. In 1986, he formed Boredoms, and after performing with Sonic Youth, he entered the U.S. and made an impact on the global underground scene. In 2007, he held "77 BOA DRUM" in New York with 77 drummers, and in 2008, he held "88 BOA DRUM" in Los Angeles. As an individual, he has participated in Otomo Yoshihide's unit "GROUND ZERO", and has actively performed with many artists such as John Zorn and Bill Laswell, and is also active as a DJ. As a visual artist, he is known for creating the cover illustration for Beck's "Midnite Vultures" (1999), and has published art books such as "NANOO" (1996) and "ONGALOO" (2006), and has participated in exhibitions around the world such as P.S.1. He is also active as a unit "PUZZLE PUNKS" with Shinro Ohtake.

80年代初頭より重機などを用いたパフォーマンスで注目を集めた後、1986年、ボアダムスを結成。ソニック・ユースとの共演をきっかけに米国に進出、世界的なアンダーグラウンド・シーンに影響を与える。以降現在まで、ボアダムスの中心メンバーとして実験的なパフォーマンスを展開、2007年にはニューヨークで77名のドラマーとともに「77 BOA DRUM」、2008年にはロサンゼルスで「88 BOA DRUM」を開催。個人名義では、大友良英のユニット「GROUND ZERO」に参加したほか、ジョン・ゾーン、ビル・ラズウェルなど多数のアーティストと精力的に共演、DJとしても活躍。ヴィジュアル・アーティストとしては、BECKの『Midnite Vultures』（1999年）のジャケット・イラスト制作で知られるほか、『NANOO』(1996年)、『ONGALOO』(2006年)などの画集を出版、P.S.1など世界各地の展覧会にも参加。大竹伸朗とのユニット「PUZZLE PUNKS」としても活動している。
